Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes Most Underrated Female Rapper

The lyrical genius at her best.
The lyrical genius at her best.

Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was known as the rebel. The 'L' in TLC and the 'C' in Crazy. She was flamboyant, spontaneous and definitely lyrical. But yet in death she became one of the most underrated female lyricists of her time. She contributed many quick witted raps to many of TLC's biggest hits including; Aint 2 Proud 2 Beg, What About Your Friends, Hat 2 Da Back, Waterfalls and No Scrubs, introducing a newer delivery and a newer style and vibe for female emcees across the globe. She became her own trendsetter. She became a trendsetter for the world. Often rapping in a nasally, high pitched voice and then also switching to a more mellow raspier voice (via U Know What's Up ft Donell Jones and Let Em Have It ft 2pac).

Yes Miss Left Eye came, saw and.. conquered. But it seemed like in death, her contributions to the rap game and hip hop music has gone unnoticed. I think about her a lot of times when rappers such as Evonne Hunnicutt ( R&B / Hip-Hop/Pop group Myxx) comes to the stage and even in a sense Nicki Minaj. Though, Minaj has been more so compared to Lil Kim than anything else, sometimes her style of dress and the way she is able to change up her voice in order to ride the song remind me of Lopes in her better days.

It upsets me when I see BET and VH1 honoring some of the best rappers and not a hide nor heir of Left Eye is to be seen. I don't know if it's just because people stuck to knowing her only as "Left Eye from TLC" or if it's just that she was overshadowed by the likes of Lil Kim and Da Brat that her lyrical talent went unnoticed; But whatever the case may be she deserves WAY MORE RECOGNITION than she has received since her untimely death in April of 2002.
